Open up Outlook Express. If it asks you about making it the Default Email Client, you might want to say no for now until your sure you want Express or Full version of Outlook 200X.  You can always go back and answer that question later.

If you already use Outlook before, you will neeed to go to Tools Menu, Accounts and add a new Mail account.

The Window below could be in slightly different order depending on the Version of Office Suite you are using.

THIS NEXT ONE IS SO IMPORTANT. PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU CHECK

IMAP FOR SERVER TYPE and fill both lines with smtp.nv.cc.va.us

IMAP is a protocol used to allow a client to remotely access email folders stored on a central server. IT Staff recommends using IMAP because the folders are stored on the server, and can be accessed from anywhere.  IMAP varies from POP in that POP downloads your messages to the local hard drive of the computer from which you check your email.

What are the POP3 and IMAP settings for Microsoft Outlook Express, Eudora, Netscape Messenger, Pegasus, etc.?
For the POP3 and IMAP settings, use the server name that corresponds to the first letter of your last name. However, everyone will use the same smtp server name.

POP3 and IMAP server name Alpha
novamail1.nvcc.edu A - F
novamail2.nvcc.edu G - M
novamail4.nvcc.edu N - Z

SMTP server name Alpha
smtp.nvcc.edu Everyone on POP3 and IMAP will use this same server name.

So a recent change is to use smtp instead of novamail for Outgoing and novamailx for incoming. 'x' is 1,2 or 4 according to table above.

Do not check SPA box.

Do not import Address book etc,etc at this time.  You can do this later.

It will tell you 'There are not any folders to show for this account.  Would you like to view a list of available folders now'.  Answer YES.

Click on IMAP folders to see all your folders on Exchange Server.

Now click on any folder and click SHOW or HIDE depending whether you want to see that folder while your in Express.

Synchronizing Folders

If you add a folder to the Exchange server from something other than Outlook Express you will have to "tell" Outlook Express about them.

  • Click on the exchange server name in the Folders window.

  • Click on IMAP Folders button.

  • Any folder which is missing the icon is one which Outlook Express is not displaying.

  • Hold the CTRL key down and select all the folders you want to add to Outlook Express and then press the Show button.

  • Press OK and you'll see the folder(s) show up in the Folders window.

Message Synchronization

If you want to keep a copy of all your messages locally so you can work on them even when you don't have a network connection you can configure message synchronization.

  • Click on the exchange server name in the Folders window.

  • Hold down the CTRL key and select any folders you'd like synchronization enabled on.

  • Press the Settings button and select All Messages.

  • Now whenever you press the Synchronize Account button all the messages in those folders will be synchronized with the server. There is no automated synchronization.

You can check synchronization for each folder you have showing to make it synchronize automatically. By Default the Inbox is Checked and All Messages are Synchronized. So they are available even if you are Offline. Check the boxes of the folders you want available Offline.

When you are finished, go to Tools, Accounts, Mail tab, select the novamail account, properties and make sure email address matches reply address.  Fill in reply address. Reply address will be blank initially. On Server tab check my server requires authentication for Outgoing email.
